Writing a critical scene analysis.

The Activity:
After watching the Air Speed Record scene from Martin Scorsese’s film “The Aviator” you are required to use your knowledge of film language and cinematic codes and conventions to analyse one of the following elements in depth:
• Mise-en-scene
• Cinematography
• Sound and Editing

Instructions:
You are to write a detailed analysis which discusses the effectiveness of one element and adheres to the following structure:

First paragraph - Introduction: This section should:
• Introduce the film and its genre
• Introduce your selected area for discussion (Mise-en-scene, Cinematography, Sound and Editing)
• State why this film is a good or bad example of this genre

Second Paragraph – The body: During this stage you should:
• Describe the chosen element in depth
• Provide details and evidence to support your statement about the film

Third Paragraph: Conclusion:
The conclusion should summarise each of the major points and support your statement about the film’s effectiveness in the selected element.
